Natalie Simmons: Jewelry

My inspiration comes from living in New Orleans. I was driven to create the intricate wrought iron patterns that one can see on the balconies and gates throughout the French Quarter. I saw out these designs, or bend and forge wire, from sterling silver. I use many techniques, sawing, piercing, bending wire, soldering, casting, forging and stone setting, to get to the finished piece. On several of my pieces I add a black patina to further enhance the iron look of the piece. A second “line” of work is called Fish Scales. I use concave domed squares soldered to a pin and hinged together to create a flowing line of brushed silver. It is made to look liquid-like and shimmery within a simple format.
