Caren Nowak: Mixed Media

Caren was a ceramic artist for 25 years until Hurricane Katrina changed the trajectory of her life. After losing her home and studio she spent every spare moment taking photographs on the streets of New Orleans. Her images captured the fractured city; the treasures that became trash, the architectural elements that bent but held, the wacky signs that everyone seemed to post. She attempted to convey the ambience of a beautiful broken city that had taken on an otherworldly grace. The result is a collection of photographic images and collages that capture the smallest of details from among the thousands of photographs she amassed. They create whole new stories of the post-Katrina world she inhabits. New Orleans is filled with interesting subjects in all its fascinating neighborhoods which she continues to explore in search of her next image. There’s always so much to discover lying literally just around the corner.
